What is fire-stopping, and why is it important?

Fire-stopping is a life-saving construction technique where we seal openings and joints in walls, floors, and ceilings to stop the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases.

Examples where it’s required:

• Around pipes, ducts, or wires that pass through walls or floors

• Between fire-rated wall assemblies in multi-family or commercial units

• In legal suites to meet BC Building Code

We Use:

• Intumescent sealants

• Fire-rated drywall and insulation

• Fire-safe caulking and sleeves

✅ Proper fire-stopping can contain fire in a room for 1–2 hours, giving occupants time to escape and protecting property.

🔒 Savkaar ensures every legal suite and commercial job is compliant, keeping you safe and avoiding failed inspections.

What’s better: wood framing or steel stud framing?

Both wood and steel stud framing have their pros and cons. The right choice depends on your project type, budget, and building code requirements.

🪵 Wood Studs (Common for Residential):

• Cheaper and widely available

• Easy to cut, nail, and install

• Good for bearing walls

• May warp, twist, or attract moisture/insects if not protected

🧱 Steel Studs (Best for Commercial & Clean Buildouts):

• Straight, uniform, and lightweight

• Resistant to fire, rot, and pests

• Excellent for commercial TI units, ceilings, and interior partitions

• Requires special fasteners and tools

💬 Savkaar Recommendation:

• Use wood framing for load-bearing and most residential builds

• Use steel studs for basements, T-bar ceilings, or commercial interiors

How long does it take to complete a full basement renovation?

A typical full basement renovation takes between 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the project’s complexity, size, and municipal permits.

General Timeline:

• 1–2 weeks: Design, demolition, permits, and layout preparation

• 2–3 weeks: Framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC rough-ins

• 1–2 weeks: Insulation, drywall installation, taping & sanding

• 1–2 weeks: Flooring, paint, bathroom/kitchen installs, final touches

Factors That Affect Duration:

• Permit processing time (varies by city)

• Material delivery schedules

• Inspection delays

• Custom work (built-ins, custom ceilings, high-end finishes)

💬 Savkaar Tip: We offer efficient project scheduling and site coordination, so multiple trades flow without downtime — ensuring you’re back to enjoying your new space sooner.

What does “frame-to-finish” construction mean?

“Frame-to-finish” means we take care of everything from the initial structural framing to the final finishing touches of your construction or renovation project.

At Savkaar Construction Group, this includes:

1. Framing – Wood or steel stud structure for walls, ceilings, and partitions

2. Insulation – Thermal and soundproofing materials as per code

3. Drywall – Hanging, taping, mudding, and sanding

4. Ceiling Systems – T-bar grid, drop ceilings, or custom bulkheads

5. Fire-stopping – Fire-rated assemblies and sealing for code compliance

6. Finishing – Painting, trim, tile prep, and other surface-ready elements

Whether you’re building a legal suite, commercial TI unit, or basement remodel, you only need one contractor to handle it all — no gaps between trades.

What is the best drywall for humid areas like bathrooms and basements?

For moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, and some basements, regular drywall is not recommended.

✅ Best Options:

1. Mold-Resistant Drywall (Green Board)

• Moisture-resistant core

• Great for humid areas, but not for direct water contact

2. Cement Board (e.g., Durock, HardieBacker)

• Ideal behind tiles in showers or tub areas

• Completely water-resistant

3. Purple Board (XP Drywall)

• Higher mold resistance than green board

• Suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, and basements

4. DensShield or similar brands

• Fiberglass-faced panels

• Prevent mold growth and absorb less water than paper-faced drywall

🚿 Savkaar Recommendation:

• Use cement board in wet areas like behind shower tiles.

• Use mold-resistant drywall on other bathroom walls and ceilings.

• Always pair with proper ventilation (fan installation) and fire-rated products where required.
